Before you install: check what your Mac needs
Downloading OCLP is the easy part. Whether your Mac ends up with full graphics acceleration, or loses it permanently, depends on which GPU it has — and two MacBook Air models cannot run OpenCore Legacy Patcher at all. Our supported Macs list covers all 101 models and tells you which situation yours is in before you build a USB installer.
Gather three things before you start: a 16 GB or larger USB drive (the macOS installer needs it), a Time Machine backup of anything you cannot lose, and one to two hours on stable power. If your Mac is on the supported list, download the newest macOS installer your model can take — newer is not always better on patched Macs, so match the installer to what the compatibility list recommends for your model.
How to install OpenCore Legacy Patcher
- Install OpenCore-Patcher.pkg from the buttons above, then open OpenCore-Patcher from Applications.
- Choose Build and Install OpenCore and install it to your USB drive (for a clean install) or the internal drive EFI (for an upgrade).
- Reboot holding the Option key, select EFI Boot, then boot the macOS installer and install normally.
- After reaching the desktop, open OpenCore-Patcher again and apply Post-Install Root Patches if it offers them — this is what restores Wi-Fi, graphics acceleration and audio on older Macs.
If anything goes wrong along the way: installer stuck or failing, Mac will not boot, root patch errors, or dead keyboard or trackpad.
Verify your download
Every file above comes straight from Dortania’s GitHub releases — never from a mirror. After downloading, compare its SHA-256 checksum with the one published on the GitHub release page. On a Mac, run shasum -a 256 Downloads/OpenCore-Patcher.pkg in Terminal and check the output matches. If it does not match, delete the file and download again.

Is OpenCore Legacy Patcher free and safe? Yes — it is free, open-source software from the Dortania team. It works by relaxing some of Apple’s boot protections, which is expected: macOS will warn about it, and that warning is normal on a patched Mac.
Can I install normal macOS updates afterwards? Small updates usually install fine, but re-run Post-Install Root Patches after every update. Major macOS upgrades need a newer OpenCore-Patcher build first — check the releases page before upgrading.
How do I uninstall it? The Uninstaller package above removes the app and its utilities, but it does not undo root patches. To return a Mac fully to stock, reinstall the original macOS from Recovery.
